Evidence suggesting CIA working in Taiwan

Spy movies are an all time favorite for many filmmakers because it’s a genre that most people enjoy, and always has a solid fan base. But in the real world, intelligence missions are always “hush-hush”. The shocking Keyser case has been generating a lot of speculation and allegations of espionage, but did you know that there is evidence suggesting that the CIA has been collecting information in Taiwan, as well?

We often see the CIA and the FBI in suspenseful movies, but did you know that they are actually here collecting intelligence in Taiwan?

Back in 1964, one of the founders of the DPP, Peng Ming-min, was arrested for drafting The Declaration of Formosan Self-salvation. Peng was released after a year in jail, and left Taiwan through unconventional arrangements. Some said that the CIA had gotten involved, and had assisted in Peng’s escape.

“They helped him after he escaped to the U.S. They arranged for him to work as a “visiting professor” at various universities in the U.S. But the truth could only be verified by Professor Peng himself,” said Shih Cheng-feng, a professor in Tamkang University's department of public administration

A second example is Colonel Chang Hsien-yi, who escaped from Taiwan after revealing details of the nation’s nuclear technology to the CIA. In their attempts to gather intelligence, the CIA has many undisclosed informers in Taiwan. Back in 1982, the former deputy director of the Institute for Nuclear Energy Research revealed to the U.S. details regarding Taiwan’s nuclear weapons program. The CIA arranged for Chung to leave the country immediately after the mission was exposed.

“In Chung’s case it’s got to be the CIA,” said Shih Cheng-feng.
“The Americans are concerned with the direction that we are heading towards and I am sure they had many agents who are here to collect that information,” said Examination Yuan chief, Yao Chia-wen.

With the Keyser case now being examined, the Americans are probably concerned about the possible leaks of their intelligence information. But their intelligence work is known to be held up around the world as an example to many intelligence organizations.
